Van Buren
County Youth
Service Project

Sunday, January 29th, some of the high school youth went to the Van Buren County Animal Shelter to build shelters for outdoor cats to help protect them during the cold winter months.

The shelters are created from large Styrofoam boxes through which a hole is cut to allow entrance.  The lid and box are secured by much duct tape, and the hole also reinforced with duct tape.  The final step is adding the straw for them to burrow down into for warmth.

The dog is now named Lucy and has a "forever home."

It was a great project, and I would say their favorite so far, other than Magnify the Light.  We also had a mascot, Lucy, who is shown in the pictures.  She appears to be a wire haired terrier mix – maybe 3- 4 years old.  Clearly likes to be held, and it was great fun having her join us!  Since this picture was taken, Lucy has been adopted!

We were joined in this activity by Les Buhl, who had just as good a time as the kids!  Thanks to all for helping our four legged, furry friends survive the elements in Michigan!
